The beads are meant to work with the NETSUKE so the japanese people could hang items on a sash from their kimono..

I love this one to!!

today, they are carved from box wood in china..

i will be loved...someday, to wear thouse beads, as MOJO, on a tb bracelet..maybe from bones or silver..
i don´t like "plastic"..

Hisae...I LOVE these types of beads!! The carved one is not an old one, but I liked it. I have so many Japanese friends that I work with and have worked with for the past 10+ years, so I always remember them when I look at these beads. I had to get them to tell me how to pronounce those words...netsuke, ojime.....I was soooooooo off with my pronounciation....I think people do not realize just how kind and honorable Japanese people really are. They are THE best mentors in the world!!

Clochard---
"first made in china´s HEIBEI Province during the mid-1980s"---
did you mean 1680s? Or 1980s for current mass-production of the beads?

I know netsuke have been around a loooong time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netsuke

I did look around ebay for some bracelet beads, I have not found much. Beads carved of boxwood are available in some great animals and motifs, but they would have to be drilled bigger, like Trolldog did. I found a few bone beads that have been made and cored for bracelets, but only in geometric patterns and rather crudely carved.

This would have been a great idea for the people contest! Could you post the link to the boxwood beads? My father has a big standing drill I could try to make the holes bigger.

I would very carefully evaluate them before buying. A lot of them are so inticately carved that you would lose a lot of the detail once you drilled a 3.8 mm hole through them. The size of those beads vary a lot, too.

Most of the beads in that search are from one US seller. Maybe you could find some in Europe if you can translate 'boxwood' into other languages!

In Italian it would be 'legno di bosso', if anybody wants to look for it in Europe! Basketball

I am just collecting other brands than Pandora for 3 month now. So unfortunately I am not able to show you a lot of pictures, but I did a lot of research and found a lot at the world wide web. Maybe one of the following ideas would be a topic you could fill with content. I would love to see some pictures for inspiration! sunny

1. Architecture

for example
- Wismart (Wismar, Germany)
- Tedora (Italy)
- Wingerath (Berlin, Germany)

2. Glass beads of different artists

for example
- lampwork beads from etsy or dawanda or brightbeads.nl

3. Australian wildlife

for example
- Bower beads
- Silverado
- redbailfrog
